BRITISH COLUMBIA: Migrants transferred from base
PRINCE GEORGE -- A planeload of Chinese migrants arrived in Prince George from Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt. The 157 Chinese were in handcuffs as they came off a chartered plane and were transferred to police buses. They will be housed at an old provincial jail in Prince George for the next few months as their refugee hearings proceed. Immigration officials said they wanted to clear the migrants out of CFB Esquimalt in case any new boats arrive off the B.C. coast. They say the Victoria-area base was never intended to be a long-term detention centre. CP |
