Manning wants speedy deportation of illegal migrants
WebPosted Fri Sep 17 08:26:59 1999

OTTAWA - Federal opposition leader Preston Manning says illegal migrants should be given a speedy hearing and turfed out of Canada within a week if their refugee claims are unfounded.

Manning is calling on the federal Liberals to crack down on illegal people-smuggling.

"I don't think there's much disagreement that that's the kind of system that's necessary," he said.

Nearly 600 Chinese migrants have landed in four boatloads in British Columbia during the summer.

Manning's comments came after a meeting with the Chinese ambassador to Canada.
