Naval base prepares for more migrants

VICTORIA (CP) -- The crew of a human smuggling ship caught off the British Columbia coast briefly tried to elude a navy destroyer before surrendering, a navy spokesman said Friday.
HMCS Huron hailed the boat as it approached but the migrant vessel didn't respond, increased speed and continued toward shore, said Lt.-Cmdr. Chris Henderson.
"With a very large and sleek warship bearing down on this suspected migrant vessel and a number of helicopters and a patrol plane making their presence very clearly felt, the master of the vessel evidently thought better of trying to run away from the situation," Henderson told a news conference in Vancouver.
He said the ship's engines were cut and a white T-shirt was hoisted.
The migrants, the fourth boatload from China to be found in B.C. waters this summer, were headed for Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt aboard a navy destroyer after being transferred to the Huron.
