IMMIGRATION: PM takes firm stand on people smuggling

Friday, October 22, 1999

VANCOUVER -- Prime Minister Jean Chrétien said yesterday that he wants the book thrown at those caught smuggling people into Canada.

Mr. Chrétien, speaking after opening a $70-million virtual-game studio in Burnaby, B.C., said the number of refugee applicants who came by boat to the West Coast this summer is less than those who arrive by plane every month through Toronto.

But the Prime Minister said he's bothered most by those who put migrants on rusty boats and send them across the Pacific. He said he wants them caught and jailed, but how is up to Immigration Minister Elinor Caplan. CP
