Library protest
WebPosted Oct 1 1999 9:28 AM PDT

VANCOUVER - There was a lot of noise at the Vancouver Public Library last night. More than 150 demonstrators turned out to protest a meeting attended by lawyer Doug Christie and former newspaper columnist Doug Collins.

Protesters accuse the pair of promoting racism and intolerance.

Marcel Bighetty was arrested as some demonstrators tried to rush the meeting.

He says, "One of the policemen accused me of bashing my head against him, which I never did, like I got glasses on, I value my glasses, you know. It just shows who are the racists. I don't care if I have to go to jail. I'll do anything to fight racism. I experience, I experience racism at least once a day. I am sick of it."

Bighetty was released without charge.

Meeting participants were escorted from the library through a side door, and they did not speak to reporters.
