A migrant's tale of abduction
WebPosted Oct 13 1999 9:50 AM PDT

VANCOUVER - One of the first Chinese migrants brought to B.C. this summer is coming forward with a story of virtual slavery.

The man says after his release in Vancouver, he was was abducted and taken to New York.

He says he works in a restaurant, 12 hours a day, all but one day a week.

And while he makes a thousand dollars a month, the snakeheads have upped his debt to $70-thousand dollars.

He says they've also threatened his wife in China.

The man has approached Victor Wong of the Vancouver Association of Chinese Canadians.

Wong says, "He recognizes that he is an indentured person, that the snakeheads have tricked him. Our country waxes eloquent about being against trafficking in slavery. Here is a person who is in danger. He's stateside, but he's some that has asked us for help. I hope that we can help him out."

Wong says he has to negotiate with authorities who have an arrest warrant for the man.
