Fighting the anti-immigrant and refugee backlash

Ottawa - The Canadian Labour Congress and the Canadian Council for Refugees are co-sponsoring a series of cross-country public meetings to discuss refugee and immigration issues in Canada.

For the first time, labour and refugee service organizations will raise several timely concerns such as: how to fight the anti-immigrant and refugee backlash occurring in many regions of the country; how to build links between workers' rights, refugee rights and human rights; as well as union sponsorship of refugees, particularly of trade unionists facing persecution.

The first Forum on Refugee and Immigration Issues will take place in Windsor on November 21st. During the next six months others will take place in Toronto, Halifax, Montréal, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Calgary and Vancouver.

What: Forum on Refugee and Immigration

Speakers: Hassan Yussuff, Canadian Labour Congress Executive Vice-President; Francisco Rico Martinez, President, Canadian Council for Refugees

When: Sunday, November 21st, 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Where: University of Windsor, Katzman Lounge - Vanier Hall (at Wyandotte West near Huron Church Road - across from the Ambassador Bridge entrance)
