Fijians want Ottawa to step in
VANCOUVER
(CKNW/AM980) -- Lower Mainland Fijians say Ottawa has
let them down. Members of the International Committee
for Democratic Rights in Fiji say the feds have all but
ignored the on-going coup back in their homeland.
Umendra Singh says Ottawa should be using all of it
influence to restore democracy to Fiji, and to reinstate
Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudry and his Cabinet. He says
people of Indian origin in Fiji are being terrorized by
the millitary and supporters of coup leader George
Speight so Ottawa should lift all visa requirements for
Fiji Indians, as they did for Kosovar refugees in 1998.
In addition, Singh wants the United Nations to recall
all Fijian peacekeepers. He says they can't be
terrorists at home and peacekeepers overseas.
