Chinese migrant escapes
PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. - A search got underway
in Prince George Thursday afternoon after one of the Chinese boat
people being held at the Prince George jail managed to escape.
Corrections officials say the man got away from the jail's
exercise yard. Several police and corrections officials recaptured
the man after an eight-hour search.
The escape comes the same day that an advocacy group for the
Chinese migrants demanded an inquiry into how Corrections B.C.
treats them.
The group, known as DARE, alleges
the prisoners are being subjected to beatings and solitary
confinement. But Sheldon Green, who speaks for Corrections B.C.,
says DARE's claims are untrue. Green says two independent
organizations have looked into similar claims before, and didn't
find anything wrong.
