Stowaways seek refugee status

HALIFAX (CP) -- Two of five stowaways who tried to jump ship in Halifax are seeking refugee status, officials confirmed today.

The five were picked up by police Thursday just minutes after leaving a container ship tied up in the harbour.

Immigration officials interviewed all five and determined that they were Romanians who had boarded the vessel in Italy earlier this month.

The vessel left port Thursday night, taking three of the men with it.

The two who stayed behind will now have to wait for an immigration hearing to determine whether their application to stay will be accepted. That could take several months.
