Refugee newser "Cancelled"
VANCOUVER
(CKNW/AM980) -- An advocacy group for refugees wants to
know why the Immigration Department prevented a Chinese
migrant woman from holding a news conference in
Vancouver, to discuss allegations of abuse by staff at
the B.C. Correctional Centre for women in Burnaby. The
group "DARE," Direct Action Against Refugee
Exploitation, arranged a news conference for the woman
following her detention hearing Monday. But a "DARE"
spokesperson says the woman was ordered to remain in
detention even though a family member was willing to
post a bond. Adida Sharma says the woman was then
whisked away by immigration officials before she could
discuss her abuse allegations with
reporters.
