Save the children

Nancy M. T. Pinnington

Wednesday, March 29, 2000

Toronto -- These Chinese children have done no wrong other than to obey the wishes of their parents and submit to an agonizing crossing of the Pacific Ocean in a deplorable boat, an unwelcoming reception here, a sojourn in a group home in Windsor, Ont., and the prospect of jail for four of the youngsters for no other crime than being 16. If they entered this country illegally, it was at the behest of the snakeheads and no one else.

Surely we have more compassion than to throw them into jail, where they will be molested and beaten in all likelihood.

As Canadians, can we not do better than this?
