Sunday, June 4, 2000 THE MIGRANT COST
(Catherine Urquhart)
- Nearly six hundred Chinese migrants arrived aboard rusty
freighters last summer. Last month, 90 of the migrants were
deported to China. But, the majority is still in British Columbia.
Housing and processing them has so far cost taxpayers millions of
dollars. While federal authorities acknowledge the expense to all
Canadians, Attorney General Andrew Petter admits the migrants are
costing BC taxpayers even more. Two jailbreaks at the Prince
George Regional Correction Facility are only adding more zeros to
the mounting bill. And it could get worse. The RCMP say they're
bracing for the arrival of even more Chinese migrants this summer.
Whether more migrants arrive or not, taxpayers can bank on paying
for years to come. |
