Crowds attack snakeheads' homes
WebPosted Fri Jun 30 16:46:23 2000

BEIJING - Human-smugglers in China, called snakeheads, are under more pressure these days. People are ransacking their homes and police are making more arrests.

A newspaper in China says dozens of people broke into the homes of the alleged smugglers. They smashed furniture and broke windows.

They "tearfully demanded that the snakeheads return their loved ones," reported one newspaper.

The people who live in the homes had already fled.

On June 18, 58 people died in a truck while trying to sneak into Britain. The people who attacked the homes think those who died are their relatives.

British police say they are close to identifying 29 of those who died.

Fujian province
There hasn't been much coverage of the story in Fujian province in southern China, the starting point of many of the would-be migrants.

But since the deaths, police there say they have arrested 11 people. The police say they are part of the gangs that smuggle Chinese desperate for a better life abroad.
