Thursday, June 22, 2000 IMMIGRATION T-SHIRT SCANDAL
(Keith Wells) - What
was intended as a simple "thank you" to Immigration Canada
employees for their hard work has generated still more controversy
over the treatment of illegal migrants. At issue are golf shirts
that were given to immigration workers reading, "Class of 90."
That refers to the 90 migrants deported from Canada last month who
are now facing an uncertain future in Fujian jails. Victor Wong of
the Association of Chinese Canadians says the insignia on the
shirts is distasteful, and says whoever is responsible showed poor
judgment. That person is Immigration Canada's Rob Johnson. He says
he had the shirts made for staff members to thank them for their
hard work in dealing with the migrants, but admitted it was a
mistake. Immigration staff has been asked to return the one
hundred shirts, which are valued at about two thousand dollars.
Two hundred and sixty migrants are still being detained in the
Vancouver area. As soon as the Chinese government gives its
approval, many of them will be sent home, just as the first 9 0
were last month. |
