Inquiry into migrant riot opens
MAPLE RIDGE
(CKNW/AM980) -- An inquiry has opened into last week's
riot by Chinese migrants at a Maple Ridge jail. The
first witness was an outspoken advocate for the
migrants. Victor Wong with the Vancouver Association of
Chinese Canadians feels the migrants who arrived last
summer should not be in prison-style custody. Wong says
there should be Mandarin-speaking prison staff members,
and a culturally senstive policy manual should be
designed for jail staff.
