Tuesday, June 13, 2000 MIGRANT RIOT UNDER
INVESTIGATION
(Keith Wells) -
Attorney General Andrew Petter has ordered an investigation into a
disturbance at a jail in Maple Ridge on Monday that caused about
six thousand dollars damage. Forty-nine migrants went on a rampage
for several hours at the Alouette River Prison, smashing windows,
toilets and setting a small fire inside the facility. Victor Wong
of the Association of Chinese Canadians says the inmates became
violent after they were not served dinner Sunday night, and then
were locked down. A prison spokesman says the prisoners were
locked down after some of them refused to eat. Thirty of the 49
migrants have been transferred to the Surrey Pre-Trial Centre. The
19 others were moved to the Fraser Regional Prison. Meanwhile, a
review is also being conducted into the short-lived escape of
seven migrants from a Prince George jail earlier this
month. |
