Hearings near
completion for Chinese migrants WebPosted Jul 30 1999 5:28 PM PDT
VANCOUVER - Immigration Canada says
that by the end of the day it expects to complete all the
hearings on the 123 Chinese migrants found off Vancouver
Island last week. So far, only eight teenagers among the group
have been set free into the care of B.C. social workers.
American immigration officials are watching this case
closely. In the past many illegal migrants have landed in
Canada but ended up in the United States. Canadian immigration
official Rob Johnston says the proper steps are being taken
with the Chinese migrants. "We're aware of concerns of other
countries but we have to ensure that our Canadian laws are
delivered and the appropriate decisions are made under
Canadian Law," he said.
Immigration can hold any claimant if they don't have proper
I.D., are considered a flight risk or could be dangerous to
the public.
