Young migrants detained in Ontario
WebPosted Fri Jan 7 10:42:33 2000 ET

CHATHAM, ONT. - Canadian authorities have charged two people with trying to smuggle 10 young Chinese girls into the U.S. from Ontario. The youths were discovered in the back of a van, and are now in custody.

The RCMP say the girls were being driven from a Chatham motel to a house on Walpole Island, with plans to get across the St. Clair River to the United States.

The RCMP say it's an unusual case because most migrants being smuggled belong to one family. The 10 girls were on their own.

They are now being held in Windsor, Ont.

Police believe the teens have been in the country for less than a week, but they don't know how the group travelled to Canada.

On Monday, Canada Customs agents in Vancouver found 25 migrants hiding in cargo containers on a ship headed to Seattle.
