Ruddock concerned
over claims of more illegals
Federal Immigration
Minister Philip Ruddock says reports of more illegal boat people en route
to Australia are of great concern.
It has been reported that more
than 1,000 illegal immigrants are expected to arrive in northern Australia
during the weekend.
Several boats are believed to be coming from
Indonesia.
Mr Ruddock told Sky News Australia authorities are
constantly receiving intelligence reports.
"Well I'm very concerned
at the reports and as we have always been," he said.
"I said last
year that we believed there was a pipeline of perhaps up to 10,000 people
who were intent on reaching Australia this way. "And we certainly know
there are many disappointed people in Indonesia, who have been putting
increasing pressure on those who may have engaged to bring them to
Australia unlawfully, [and who are unhappy] at their lack of ability to
have moved."
