Migrant ship intercepted in Pacific
WebPosted Sun Aug 29 20:50:29 1999

VICTORIA - Another refugee ship has been intercepted in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Seventy-five Asians were found aboard the broken-down vessel.

The ship is believed to have been adrift at sea for at least a month. They're now getting medical attention at Midway Island, near Hawaii.

U.S. immigration authorities say they don't know where the ship came from or where it was going.

According to U.S. Immigration officials, illegal migrants use Canada as a gateway to the U.S., where many are forced into slave labour until they pay off thousands of dollars in debt.

Earlier this summer, two other mystery ships dropped Chinese migrants on the British Columbia coast.
