VANCOUVER - Immigration officials will
go back and review twenty of the Chinese migrants cases. They
say there was an error made.
Vancouver Island Regional Manager Jim Redmond says one of
the migrants originally made it clear they wanted to apply for
refugee status. That information was not passed on to senior
Immigration officers reviewing the files. As a result, a
process was underway to deport the individual.
Redmond says the same error may have been made in twenty
cases. They will now be reviewed. The error was pointed out by
the Canadian Council of Refugees. Redmond admits he's
embarrassed by the error but calls it a unique situation and
says steps will be taken to ensure it doesn't happen again.
