Migrants charged
VANCOUVER
(CKNW/AM980) -- Eight Chinese men who arrived aboard two
of the migrant ships that landed on the B.C. coast last
summer, now face charges of organizing the human
smuggling operation. Four of the men were passengers
aboard the second ship and the other four were crew
members on the third ship. The first group of four has
been charged with organizing the smuggling operation,
the second group of four faces charges of attempting to
disembark people at sea. All eight appear in a Vancouver
courtroom May 12th for a bail hearing. In all, four
ships carrying roughly 600 smuggled migrants landed on
the west coast last summer. Federal Immigration Minister
Elinor Caplan is currently in China in an effort to sent
the message that people smuggled illegally into Canada
will likely be returned.
