Canada secures seed potato contract with China
WebPosted Wed Apr 19 14:32:28 2000

CHARLOTTETOWN - There is now a seed potato agreement between Canada and China, making Canada the only country permitted to export seed potatoes to the People's Republic.

Ivan Noonan, the general manager of the Prince Edward Island Potato Board says trial shipments will go to China in the next year. They will be monitored closely and grown in isolation.

If China is satisfied, the agreement will be automatically renewed for another year.

Noonan says he hopes the agreement will lead to major volumes in seed potato sales in five to 10 years.
